 In Shutters, shades and blinds

It’s Spring Cleaning time! Here’s a how-to clean shutters, blinds and shades.

When you received your order of shutters, blinds or shades you should have gotten an owner’s manual that has cleaning instructions in it. If you’re like me you put that some place foolproof that you would not forget – and now you have forgotten where that is! Don’t worry if you can’t find yours – we are here to help.

Regular light dusting maintains a like-new appearance for most wood and faux wood blinds and shutters, as well as cellular and roller shades.

You can use:

  • a dry, clean, soft feather duster,
  • dust cloth
  • dust mitt

Make sure to get into all the slats or louvers and corners. This is simple and can be done with your regular house cleaning schedule.

For a deeper cleaning, use your vacuum with the brush attachment. Gently move the brush attachment over your window treatments using a vertical stroke.

 Spot Cleaning

If there is a spot that needs to be removed from your wood and faux wood blinds or shutters, use a soft, clean cloth moistened with lukewarm water. If the spot is stubborn, a mild detergent may be used. Be sure NOT to use chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners. Be very careful using a cloth with water on any cellular or fabric shades. Do NOT rub. Instead, blot gently to avoid creasing or damaging the fabric.

Professional Cleaning

There are several companies that do on-site ultrasonic cleaning and off-site dry cleaning. Make sure these companies are proficient in handling blinds and shades and have a good reputation as well as good reviews from past clients. Do your research before you hire anyone. For our area we recommend Chet’s Cleaning.
